Last chance to sign up for BCHF conference
|
|
Registration is due May 31 for the BCHF virtual conference, to be held June 3-5, co-hosted by the Surrey Historical Society. Students can attend for free (email Laurie@bchistory.ca to obtain the access code). Links will be sent to registrants a week before the event. Societies also need to register to attend the AGM.

Book auction to take place online
|
|
Each year the BCHF relies on a fun-filled silent
auction of books to raise money for its book awards program. This year’s virtual auction promises a great
selection and some healthy competition with other bidders. Bidding opens June 3 at 9 a.m. and goes
until June 5 at 8:30 p.m. We will
invoice winners and ship books afterward.

The Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC (a BCHF member) has announced the 2021
winners of its awards, which includes another one of our members, the Lytton Chinese History Museum.

Applications sought for Terry Reksten Memorial Fund
|
|
The Friends of the BC Archives is now accepting applications for the
Terry Reksten Memorial Fund. The fund offers two $1,000 grants to help
community archives organize, preserve, describe and disseminate records
significant to BC and its regions.

Royal BC Museum celebrates Asian Heritage Month
|
|
May is Asian Heritage Month and the Royal BC Museum is celebrating
with online events and a pop-up exhibit. The museum is sharing stories
and experiences of Asian settlers in B.C. as part of an effort to
counter the recent rise of anti-Asian hate crimes in the province.

Punjabi dining set joins 100 Objects of Interest
|
|

A new item featured online by the Royal BC Museum’s 100 Objects of
Interest collection, is a tamba (Punjabi for mixed copper alloys) dining
set one man used on his voyage from Punjab to BC in 1927.

Canadian Nautical Research Society conference nears

Province announces $2M for Japanese Canadian seniors
|
|

The BC government has announced $2 million for the Nikkei Seniors
Health Care and Housing Society to enhance programming for seniors and
local communities. The money is part of a provincial promise to honour
Japanese Canadians by recognizing the traumatic internment of almost
22,000 people beginning in 1942.

Fire damages historic Surrey hall
|
|
|
A fire at Surrey’s historic Strawberry Hill Hall, built in 1909, has stalled a $1.2-million rehabilitation project that was expected to see the building converted into a preschool.

Historic Central Saanich barn to be demolished
|
|
|

Two historic farm buildings in Central Saanich, including one built in
1887, are to be torn down. Council decided last week against temporary
protection measures for two barns on the former Woodwynn Farms site
based on a report that says the buildings are at risk of collapse.

The Ministry of Transportation has posted another in its popular series
of videos of BC highways as they were decades ago. The latest one takes
us from Osoyoos to Creston in 1966. Count the gas stations! They were everywhere.

The Fernie and District Arts Council has produced a detailed story of The Arts Station, formerly the city’s CPR station. The station was built in 1909, on the same location as two previous
buildings destroyed by fire. For more than 30 years, it has been
Fernie’s centre for the arts.
